Search Tips

A space between each words or phrases indicates AND.

Generally, the AND combination will search for ALL of the words or phrases irrespective of where it appears in the document. It can be next to each other or far apart from each other. A reasonable number of documents can be found using this parameter.

Examples:-
1. witness creditors petition Sarawak

- witness creditors petition Sarawak will find all the cases containing all the words "witness" and "creditors" and "petition" and "Sarawak" somewhere in the text - the words need not be next to each other.

2. red car

- will find all the cases containing both the words "red" and "car" somewhere in the text - the words need not be next to each other.
The search on both words is the same as a search on car red if this option is used.
Finds cases with any of the words - this is equivalent to the Boolean "OR". Using this will give you the most general search and find the most cases.

The use of “/” to indicate an OR searching. Include a space before and after “ / ”.

Use the “/” connector to find documents that contain either or both of the words or phrases linked by “/”. Use the “/” connector to link search words that are synonyms, antonyms, alternative spellings, or abbreviations.

Example:-
1. Contract / Breach / Aggravated

- will find all the cases containing either the word "contract" or "breach" or "aggravated" or all three words.
Finds cases with an exact match with what you type in the Search Term column.

Searching a single exact phrase can be done by either one of the following TWO methods.

Method 1.
In the Search Term column, key in the phrase to be searched.
Then under the Proximity option, click Exact Phrase.
Next, click Search.

Method 2.
In the Search Term column, key in the phrase to be searched.
Add quotation marks “xx” before and after the phrase.
Click Search.

Example 1 : Method 1
Key in absolute assignment select Proximity option, Exact Phrase. Will find all the cases containing exactly the word "absolute assignment".

Example 2 : Method 2
Key in “vacant possession” select Proximity option, Exact Phrase or use default as Anywhere. This search will find all the cases containing exactly the word "vacant possession”.
Finds cases with more than ONE exact phrase keyed in the Search Term column.

Add quotation marks "xx" before and after each search phrase. Each phrase is to be separated by a space. The space in between phrases indicates an AND search for all the phrases.

Example:-
"affidavit in reply" "power of attorney" 
You will find cases containing both the phrases. The phrases can be next to each other or far apart from each other.
Finds cases with either ONE of the exact phrases keyed in the Search Term column.

Add quotation marks "xx" before and after each search phrase. Each phrase is to be separated by a space. Key in "/" in between the exact phrases. Include a space before and after "/".

Example:-
"more than 50 times" / "more than fifty times" will find all the cases containing either one or both the phrases.
Key in ONE exact phrase in the Search Term column.
Add quotation marks "x" before and after the phrase. Key in the other word(s) to be searched with each word separated by a space.
"Preliminary objection" commission secret speculation will find all the cases containing the exact phrase and all the words somewhere in the text. The exact phrase and words may not necessarily be next to each other.
Key in ONE exact phrase in the Search Term column. 

Add quotation marks " before and after the phrase. 

Key in the word(s) you wish to search for with each word separated by a space.
 
"Res ipsa" "Application of doctrine" "loss occurred" carriage wharf / Evidence
will find all the cases containing the exact phrases and the words carriage and either one or both the words wharf or Evidence. The exact phrase and words may not necessarily be next to each other.

Finds cases not containing the word/phrase.

Key in the Search Term column the word NOT followed by an opening bracket. Then key in the word to exclude followed by the closing bracket. For multiple words separate each word with a space. The same AND searching rules will apply. The same rule will also apply for excluding an exact phrase. Add quotation marks "x" before and after the phrase.

Example:-
1. not (drugs dadah) 
- get results without the words "drugs and dadah"
Key in ONE exact phrase in the Search Term column. 

Add quotation marks " before and after the phrase. 

Key in the word(s) you wish to search for with each word separated by a space.
 
"Res ipsa" "Application of doctrine" "loss occurred" carriage wharf / Evidence
will find all the cases containing the exact phrases and the words carriage and either one or both the words wharf or Evidence. The exact phrase and words may not necessarily be next to each other.
Limit the search words or phrases to be found within a sentence.

Select this Proximity option when the closeness between the searched word(s) is important. The proximity of the word(s) is not determined. The word(s) may be next to each other but may not necessarily be an exact phrase.

Examples : vexatious affidavits
Will get cases with results such as “... be 'scandalous, frivolous or vexatious ' in their Affidavit in Support”.
